We had a fun and furious week this week at the Sunshine Farm. We have been
wrapping up our Information Text Unit and celebrated this Animal Study at the Jacksonville Zoo! We are rather the Habitat Experts if I do say so myself and impressed our parents and our zoo expert with our Animal Schema! What a fun day :D!

Painted Lady Butterflies Slideshow

Watching our Painted Ladies grow and change was magical! We watched them eat and eat some more as caterpillars and molt and spin their webs as they prepared for their big change.Then like a magic act, they disappeared behind their chrysalis and emerged as butterflies! What fun to record and observe such an amazing metamorphosis!

The Butterfly Release Party!

Paired with our Kindergarten Butterfly Buddies, we prepared to release our Painted Lady Butterflies. We have greatly enjoyed watching them progress from caterpillar to butterfly and teaching Ms. S's class about them each step of the way. Five of our students shared their Butterfly Research with our Kindergarten friends in a question and answer session before we released our butterflies into their new environment. Go Butterflies Go!

Hurray for Habitats!

Our newest Essential Question in Science is "What is a Habitat?" We began our discussion today by relating what we already have learned about Habitats in Kindergarten and First Grade. We know what habitats are called, some examples of animals may live in different habitats, and some of the things animals need to survive. Our students shared questions to help us focus specifically on how animals survive and grow in their habitat. One of our students asked, "How can camouflage helps an animal?"

Camouflage, we are finding out, is vital to the survival of animals in their habitats. As one our students put it, "Camouflage keeps another animal from biting them!" Today, we played with camouflage and tried to hide our creature from our friends who played the part of a predator. See if you can spot our hidden moths.

We also had a coachroach try to play our game. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't camouflaged!

Our Second Graders took the Tim Deegan Weather Challenge and produced their own weather forecast shows :). Watch as they include important types of weather observations, temperature, wind speed, cloud coverage, and precipitation to tell the day's weather. Many of these forecasts were actually accurate!!! Social Studies Timeline Project

In Social Studies, we are using timelines to record our birthdays and special events in our lives.Your job is create a poster or use Ti me Toast online to create a timeline of your life. If using a poster, you must include atleast each of your birthdays (using the birthday cake icon sent home) and can also include pictures and other important events. If using Timetoast, you will need your own Time Toast account including log-in and password. One of our students has already done this as an example. Not only can you add text, but also pictures as well!

Season of Giving Report

During the last few weeks before break, our students decided on a project to give to those in need during the holidays. The Sunshine Farm decided to give locally to the Second Harvest Food Bank. We had been inspired by the work of a family in our class that gives their time and energy to this cause daily. Our parent who works for Second Harvest Food Bank here in Jacksonville came and presented information that inspired us to give out of our pantries and our hearts. We learned that in area that their food bank services about 300,000 people are "food insecure" or are not sure where their next meal will come from.

Our class as well as another two classes responded to this need and raised a tremendous amount of food in only a little over a week. With our food drive we were able to provide almost 200 meals with close to that many pounds in food! Way to go Sunshine Farm!

Ahhhh...the Holidays are here with feasting, singing, crafts, and celebrating our friends and family...what a great time of year! We are hustling and bustling along with our play practice while plowing hard in the fields all day long in our other Workshops to grow and grow! We have had so much fun celebrating what we were thankful for and creating edible and non-edible turkeys! We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break and we look forward to all of our upcoming celebrations including our Holiday Play, next Thursday at 6pm! Hurray for the Holidays :D!

LIquid Races

What are Liquids?

This is the question we have been asking too! We have been observing the properties of soilds and now liquids are our main focus this week. We have looked carefully at three particular liquids, corn syrup, dish soap, and water. We used our five sense to make careful observations, but we had one more property in mind. How can we tell how thick a liquid is? How can we look more closely at this property? Why by having the first ever Sunshine Farm Liquid Race!

Our liquids found their mark on a sheet pan and the race was on!

Race Results, First Place: Water, Second Place: Dish Soap, and Third Place: Corn Syrup!

As one Second Grader so wisely put it, "The thinner the liquid, the faster it goes!"

Balances,Rulers,and Measuring Cups..Oh My!

How do you Measure Matter, you might ask?

Why with balances, rulers, and measuring cups of course! Measuring Matter is all about using the right tools and we are learning to measure, record, and read our data.

-Students put solids in order by mass (how much matter a solid has) in grams by using balances

-Students put solids in order by length in centimeters

-Last but not least we looked at how we measure liquids (using a measuring cup)!

Our Local Artist

A big Yee-haw to our local artist from the Sunshine Farm! She created an amazing piece that now hangs in the Jacksonville Second Harvest Food Bank here in Jacksonville. Not only is the artwork amazing, but the cause is incredible! Our student created this piece with the guidance of very own art teacher here at Chets and in two days the masterpiece was ready to go. We are so proud of the work done by our growing artist and the heart behind the work!

Here at Sunshine Farm we love to read!!!
Not just one genre, but poetry, non-fiction, historical documents, fables, directions,you name it! This passion for reading is spreading across our school like wild fire and our amazing leadership team has created posters that can be found all over our school to encourage us to read from genres galore! Our principal even volunteered to be slimed if we met our school reading goal and will continue to demonstrate how passionate she is about reading and the reading goals of our students! Yee-haw we just love to read :D!

Matter Begins

What is Matter? Our Second Grade Students are on journey to answer that Essential Question through a series of hands-on labs led by our observations, wonderings, and conclusions. We appreciate your support in this unit with an overwhelming response of supplies in quick fashion!!! Thank you, Thank you!!! Please don't forget to send an empty, clean water bottle with your student as we observe Matter.

At present, we are looking at matter in its solid state and learning to measure its mass with balances. Ask your student what unit of measure we are using with our balances and which item they discovered was the lightest in their group :D!

Aliens and Peanut Butter and Jelly!

Well, this week on the Sunshine Farm,we had a very unusual guest stop by and ask about making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! We are right smack dab in the middle of learning about Procedural Text and Writing and this was a great moment to show off!
This alien had never had a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich, but requested that we explain how to make one step by step. :)

We took our Martian Friend to meet our neighboring class and the alien gave our instructions for making peanut butter and jelly recipie a try. Unfortunately, she ended up getting more on her than the sandwich. We learned a valuable lesson about what needs to be in our Procedural Writing and went back to our classroom for revisions and continuing our unit.

A Relaxing Day on the Farm

Here at the Sunshine Farm, we are as busy as bees growing as Second Graders and getting ready for our holiday festivities. We sang all the way to our field trip location, Sykes and Cooper Farm and entertained our parents and our bus driver with our Holiday Play practice! Our rehearsals start next week :D! Today was a day of relaxing and enjoying a day on a working farm! We enjoyed seeing farm animals up close, walking a trail through a corn maze, eating an outdoor lunch, playing in corn kernels, bouncing around the playground, and picking a pumpkin to bring home. Ask your student about their favorite part of the day and what they learned about corn!

Wednesday is Feed Store Day!

Our students at the Sunshine Farm earn $2.00 for working hard on the farm. Each Wednesday, our Second Graders have the option to rent items to play during Feed Store Time or purchase snacks and items at the Feed Store!

A big "YEE-HAW" to all the families that have donated items for this treat each week. Our students are working hard to produce amazing Grade-A results this year academically and with their behavior. Thank you for supporting our classroom.

Tilling at the Tech Lab

The Sunshine Farm got to visit the Tech Lab this last week to test out our log-ins and practice our typing skills! Each Second Grade Student was able to use a laptop and some of them for the very first time were able to use the mouse and keypad all by themselves! We learned to use the SHIFT key and not the CAPSLOCK, how to type in our log-ins, and our blog address.

When we got to the classroom blog, we were rewarded with a typing game available where it reads, "Keyboard Practice". Please use this game at home with your student to sharpen their keyboarding skills :).

Also, the log-in address on their planner is also good for Destination Success which we will give out more information regarding this resource in our binder. It is presently under construction :).

The Sensory Safari

This last week was a whirlwind of learning, traveling, exploring, and harvesting fruitful results! The Sunshine Farm visited the Sensory Safari on foot during our first walking field trip. Our Second Graders walked to a nearby Montessori school to view amazing animals up close! We viewed animals who are native to Florida and also amazing African creatures as well! We know that excellent scientists make observations using their five senses, so it was awesome to be able to careful see and touch animals up close that we would never be able to in the wild. It was a wonderful time of observing and learning. One of our very own student's grandparents helped to give us the grand tour!!!

Eggcellent Race!

Farming is hard work, but sometimes we have so much fun we crack up!

Last week, we were asking ourselves, "How we work as Scientists?" and in order to learn our jobs during our Science part of the day, we joined together as teams for the Great Egg Race! A game/lab played by your very own teachers here at the Chets Creek Farm, our Second Graders designed a vehicle to transport an egg the farthest without cracking. Now, they didn't do this without help. Well, there were the Table Farmers (Leaders), Milkmaids (Material Managers), Roosters (Time Keepers), and the Farmhands (Recorders). These important roles helped our tables create the perfect way to transport an egg using only a bandana, tupperware, silly bands, a straw, and clothespins. What a hoedown! The races were fast and furious and some of our passengers, the eggs, were cracked. We found out that the team that worked together the best carried their egg the farthest without a scratch!!! Yee Haw for Science Jobs!!!

Every grade is touched by her spell and we are always charmed to love reading and learning more. KK Cherney has opened many doors and provided learning opportunites for our school that are unbelievable and amazing! Just take our first day, Ms. KK was the power behind the scenes. First Week of Sunshine!

What a great first week here on the Sunshine Farm! We were introduced to a whole field of farmers, their tools, animals, and even started our own crop of vegetables in our classroom! Our Second Graders bloomed during the week as we learned the rituals and routines of our classroom. We have started our workshops, Reader's, Writer's ,Skills Block, Math, and Science! All of our students tried something new as we read, "Picky Ms. Pickle" and learned that Second Grade Farming might be different, but we can't be worried about new things, we just need to try them and we will like them! New Theme..New Name..New Dreams!

Here at the Sunshine Band...we mean Sunshine Farm, we hope you are kicking back and relaxing during your first days of summer vacation. Your farmers, Mrs. Bridges and Ms. Correia have already dusted off their tractors and plows and are getting ready to cultivate a Second Grade community of learning excellence. The Sunshine Band is going to Second Grade!

The show must go on and we are taking it to Second Grade! Our band members are so thrilled that we will moving on up to Second Grade together :). Yesterday, the Sunshine Band got a sneak preview of what Second Grade will be like and they even got to see their new room!

We chatted with a Second Grade teacher and heard from second graders just what second grade was really like. They gave us helpful tips and advice and even showed us a Second Grade Reader's Theater from their Author Study, Tomie dePaola. It was a great visit and We feel less nervous about our new venture.

We are so excited to boogie into a new year with old friends!

How Do Living Things Grow and Change?

The Sunshine Band has been working on the essential question, "How Do Living Things Grow and Change?" We have studied the life cycle of a frog and of plants in detail. We have also paired this study with revisiting Report Writing to share our research of living things. In celebration of our efforts, our student were to create a representation of any life cycle they would like (except a butterfly) and present it to out class. Our students and teachers watched in awe today as what can be only described as "super scientists" presented their Life Cycle Presentations. Our students took great ownership with this assignment and we are so pleased with all the hard work! Students are presenting their research with pride as they explain the stages in a life cycle. We even had one student bring frogs in their different stages of growth; live for viewing!!! Thank you parents and students for taking the time to learn more about life cycles and sharing your schema with our class :D! We all learned something new today and look forward to hearing from all of our Sunshine Scientists :). Take a look at what was shared so far..

Celebrate Reading!

As we near the end of the year, the Sunshine Band is reading chapter books! Instead of responding to literature during Literacy Stations, the Sunshine Band is meeting in chapter club book clubs :)! Right after their own individual reading time with on-level and Literacy Station books, our almost second graders gather in groups around a chapter book. One student will read, the group listens, and then they decide as a group how to respond to the pages read that day. The Sunshine Band is having amazing conversations about their chapter books and supporting each other with comprehension all the way to Second Grade!!!

As almost second graders, our Sunshine Band is supporting almost First Graders with their comprehension and fluency. Last week, band members read with a kindergarten friend and modeled intonation and fluent reading of text. Our Kindergarten Students amazed us with their desire to read higher level text and the room was buzzing with book talk!

A Week Full of Life!

Our students have challenged themselves to observe the trends in how living things grow and change. We have observed the beginning stages of a frog and birds in our classroom and during a nature walk. Our visit the Jacksonville Zoo was also a fabulous opportunity to observe living things up close! If you were with us you know how crazy about creatures our students are!

In your student's planner, you will find a letter concerning a Life Cycle Project. Inferring: Good readers think about, search the text, and sometimes use personal knowledge to construct meaning beyond what is stated in the text.

In other words, we use clues to figure out what it means!

Sometimes, there is meaning hidden in our stories that we have to really take the time to stop and think about! We used a parody of the cartoon"Blues Clues" to solve reading mysteries as a class to help with Inferring. With our schema and the clues in the text..no book stands a chance for our reading detectives! Ask your reading detective how they "Stop and Think" about what they are reading. When doing your nightly reading or chapter with your student, have them stop and tell you what is happening in the story so far. They should include details that you would have to use the clues of the story to understand or "infer". This kind of detective work is just what good readers like to do!

Ah the Theater!

What fun to go to the theater! Today, we had a literary adventure at the Alhambra right down the street from Chets! It is amazing what a treasure we have right around the corner.
The Alhambra's performance of Snow White was interactive and exciting. It was a great connection to the work that we have been doing in Reader's Workshop with our Reader's Theater! Our students marveled at the way the actors and actresses moved and spoke on the stage. They even invited some of our First Grade students to join the cast as the Seven Dwarfs :D. Our school was honored to be visited by renown author and illustrator, Pamela Duncan Edwards and Henry Cole! Their presence was absolutely magical and our students watched in awe as they retold their stories and illustrated our ideas during a grade-level assembly yesterday. What fun it is to meet published authors!

Our growing authors marveled at the creativity and wordplay demonstrated by these two in our latest Book of the Month. We are working on replicating the types of wordplay found in "Princess Pigtoria and the Pea" by Pamela Duncan Edwards and Henry Cole. Well, to summarize the Sunshine Band's presentation of Kevin Henkes Reader's Theater....AMAZING! Our students read with intonation, many of them knew all of their lines, and their costumes were priceless! Each play was applauded as the cast took a bow at the curtain call. Our presentations of "Lilly's Big Day", "A Weekend with Wendell", "Wemberly Worried" and "Shelia Rae the Brave" was enjoyed not only by parents, but also our 3rd grade FCAT friends, a First Grade, and Kindergarten Class. The Sunshine Band shone as they presented their Reader's Theater and hopefully have been an inspiration to each other and our audiences :D. Magic Pyramid Game

As our students journey closer to Second Grade.. Combinations of Ten are apart of our schema! Students played a game during Choice Time over the last few weeks that was plain magic! Our students were given a deck of number cards to use with a partner. They were to create a pyramid with 4 rows with the cards and keep a "Mystery Card" on the side. Each time they removed a combination of ten (e.g. 6+4 or 8+2) they were to replace it with cards from their deck. When they only had one card remaining in their pyramid, our First Graders would predict what the "Mystery Card" might be... Game after game..it will always be your missing number for a combination of ten! For example, if your last card is "1" the "Mystery Card" will be..."9"!

Retelling with Kevin Henkes

Our students have journeyed through their Kevin Henkes Author Study with retelling style! We have been "WOWed" by our students' retelling of Owen. We hope you enjoyed the puppet presentation your student performed for you at home :o)!

The Sunshine Band's in-class presentations knocked our socks off! Our students were absolutely perfect in their retellings of our Henkes tales. Students showed off in front of their classmates individually as they presented their retelling with puppets! Thank you for working so hard on creating these masterpieces. Many of them are displayed on our bulletin board.

This week, we would love to entertain you with four delightful Kevin Henkes tales in our very own classroom. This Friday at 9:15 am, we are proud to present, "A Weekend With Wendell", "Wemberly Worried", "Lilly's Big Day", and "Shelia Rae the Brave"! Our students have worked in groups over the last two weeks during their Literacy Station time to present their Reader's Theater for all of their families :). Introducing Kevin Henkes!

Have you ever heard of Chrysanthemum, Owen, Lily, Wendell, or Sophie? These are just a few of the amazing characters created by Kevin Henkes! We are so excited to embark on this new Author Study :). If you click on the picture of Kevin Henkes above it will take you straight to his website. There you can learn more about his amazing books :).

Our Sunshine Band will start their week with "Making Connections" to Kevin Henkes' books. We will learn that good readers activate their prior knowledge and experiences when reading books. When a reader "connects" to the text with their own personal experience; we call this a "Text-to-Self Connection" . We will begin our connection journey with the tale of Chrysanthemum.

In the book, Chrysanthemum, our students will learn the story behind the main character's name. We may be reminded of how we got our names or nicknames just like Chrysanthemum. Our memories brought alive by this particular story event is what we call a "Text-to-Self Connection"! Practice making a "Text-to Self Connection" with your student. Think together about when their name was decided...just like the day when Chrysanthemum's name was chosen for her! We also learned that two of our former Presidents have their birthday this month and that is why we had such a long weekend! Milestones in Math

We began our month with our eyes set on the 100th day of school and while we were wating we took a closer look at 2-diamensional shapes.

We used what we knew about 2-d shapes to group them with our friends and our sorting brought out great discussions! We wanted to know if they could be grouped by size, number of corners, numbers of sides, curvy or straight lines.. and in our groupings we discovered a trend.. some were Polygons and some were not!

Our rules for Polygons set the stage for our 2-d Shape Presentations where students shared how they understood the relationship between shapes. Sides,corners, and lines oh my!

As we have been sharing our findings and growing closer to Second Grade, we came across a giant number on our Calendar Math Board... 100! In order to better understand this number, the Sunshine Band made their own special snack with groups of 10s,wrote 100 words they knew, met two 100 year old ladies (their teachers:), and counted by 1s, 2s,5s, and 10s to 100!

Can you believe it has been over 100 days of school.. so much learning past and so many more Math Adventures ahead!

Mystery Beads..Mystery Guests!

The light from the Sun can be more powerful than we can determine by our natural eyes.."It was the sunlight!" the Sunshine Band exclaimed. It was today they osberved their "Mystery Space Beads". Inside they look just like regular clear beads, but outside they are every color of the rainbow! How does it happen? Ask a First Grader, "Light from the Sun!".

To add to our mysterious day, a mystery guest was headed our way! A cousin of one of our students is studying Astronomy herself and wanted to share with us her understanding of the distance between planets. So back outside we went, to become the planets, and see our distance!

Thank you our Astronomer friend..we can't wait until you visit us again :).

Sleepover Update

Dear Sunshine Families :),
What an eventful couple of weeks! Even though it has been short, we have learned so many things about Stars and Planets! Thank you to all the families that turned in their pillow last Thursday for homework, they are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

Last Thursday, our students posed with their Star Pillows in front of our space banner and we got a great group shot :). Also, each table was responsible for presenting a Night Sky drawing to our class and explaining what you would see in the night sky.

It is amazing to hear First Graders relating vocabulary words such as constelation, heat, color, telescope, and astronmer with confidence. Ask your student how hot a blue star is.. you might be amazed!

I'm in the night sky, but I don't twinkle, what am I?

A PLANET! Planets don't twinkle, just one of the many things we learned for the first time at the MOSH Planetarium last Thursday. We had a wonderful trip and were grateful for all of the support that our chaperones provided. Our students were able to explore Space without having to leave the Earth's atmosphere :). We were guided through the day and night sky, which fit perfectly with our homework last week. Sleepover Under the Stars has begun!

Where there are First Graders there will be curiosity and where there is curiosity our learning can reach the stars!

We are reaching to infinity and beyond to grasp the concept of where our star the Sun and many other neighboring planets dwell. Out in the night and day time sky are things that First Grade Scientists wonder about!

In our study of stars, we will be answering our Essential Question, "What do we know about stars?" Thank you to all the families that did their sky viewing homework and turned in their observations and wonderings. We will try to answer our wonderings as we build new schema (our understanding and perceptions) of stars. Try asking your student,"What isthe name of our star?" "How far away is the closet star?" You might be surprised by the answer :D.

As our students learn about stars, we joing our grade-level to learn about our neighboring and not so neighboring planets. We had our first glimpse of these planets at the Planetarium (MOSH). We learned so much on our trip last Thursday, it was a blast! Please check out our next post with pictures from our day at the Planetarium.

In addition to learning about all of our planets, each First Grade Classroom will focus on a particular planet. The Sunshine Band will focus on Saturn, the sixth planet from the Sun. Check out this amazing video to help support our journey as learners to the planet Saturn!

Hurray for the New Year! 2010!

Dear Parents and Students,
We hope you enjoyed a wonderful break, filled with time with family and friends. We greatly appreciate everyone who sent us off with love and gifts our last week of school. Thank you!!! As we welcome a new year and start our journey closer to Second Grade, we wanted to save the memories from that last week of 2009 for our class.

What great memories we have of the last three days of school before break! Not only did we have a wonderful luncheon the week prior, but we were able to celebrate the winter season with many fellow students! Our class paired with a 5th grade class for a snow day! Watch how we made "snowballs", felt "blubber", decorated our own snowman, and bowled the morning away! We also joined a Kindergarten class for a Polar Express Adventure! We drank warm chocolate and decorated cookies after singing our seasonal songs for our Kindergarten friends! And last but not least, we visited Auntie Claus( our principal) on that last day for a wonderful literary experience :D. Oh what fun it is to celebrate the season with our friends! A Mem Fox Journey

During our Mem Fox Author Study, our students retold the events of the book, Possum Magic using a Google Map. A Google Map is an online map that contains satellite or traditional map images. We viewed the country of Australia via Google Map and used food placemarkers to ilustrate the journey taken in Possum Magic. Check out the magic :).

Mem Fox Celebration Day!

Last Friday, we ended our Mem Fox Author Study with a smashing good time! We began our day with our First Award Ceremony and celebrating our strides in learning so far this year :).

We then took a journey around the small playground and participated in the Bush Olympics just like Koala Lou! There was a disc throw, a bean bag toss, long jump, and relay races. We all turned out to be the gold medal winner when Ms. Correia performed Bush Magic on the 6 winner's medals :). We then returned to our classroom to write BIG BOOKS to retell our favorite Mem Fox books in our own words in our Book Club groups. We illustrated and retold Mem's books with our friends until lunch. Upon our return, we prepared our class for our very first performance of Hattie and the Fox Reader's Theater for Ms. Sasso's Kindergarten Class. One of our students finished our performance by reading one of our favorite Mem Fox books for the Kindergarteners, Time for Bed. We ended our time celebrating Mem by tasting the foods from Possum Magic! We were so excited that our families brought in these Australian foods for us to try, Pavolva, Lamington, Vegemite, Anzac Biscuits, Mornay, and more :D. If you are not sure what some of these foods maybe check out our next post.. We took a trip around Austratlia to follow our tummies :D.

What's Your Strategy?

In First Grade, we don't just want to show our answer when it comes to Math, we want our strategies to shine! As we approach separating and combining stories, we are looking to use our First Grade skills and solve our stories with atleast two strategies. Students are using sums that add up to greater or lesser amounts 5+5= 10 to solve 5+4=9 (one less). Students are also using tally marks and drawings. We explain our thinking in writing, pictures and words! Challenge your student at home, not just to write the answer, but explain their work. Ask them ,"What is your strategy?"

Book Clubs Begin!

As an extension of our work with Mem Fox books, we are gathering around a basket of our favorite books from this study and finding important story elements! Students are placed in groups known as Book Clubs. Students have chosen names for their groups and chosen roles each day. Students are using a focus directly from our Reader's Workshop mini-lesson to work together in their book clubs. Just like Ms. Correia meets with her friends at Starbucks to chat about books, our students are accountable to their friends concerning the focus for the day! Check us out!

Sweet Soil!

Have you ever wondered what was just below the surface of the earth? We have! We have been studying our soil samples, comparing what we find in soil, and recognizing that soil has layers. Yesterday, we made the layers of soil just below the surface that we could eat! First, clay and rocks: cookies :), Humus: pudding, living organisms: gummy worms, Top Soil: cookie crumbs, and leaves: sprinkles.

We have already enjoyed so many of her books, Wilfred Gordon, Time for Bed, Possum Magic, and more! We have been predicting, collecting vocabulary, and connecting to the stories from Mem. For each of Mem's books, we have paid close attention to the "attributes". We are learning to make connections through her stories to our own lives and experiences. Double the Fun.. Double Compare!

Today, we ended our Math Diagnostic and began our journey together in Number Sense with the game of Double Compare! Double Compare is a game to help increase student strategies when comparing amounts. Students are paired and given a deck of cards. The students split their deck of cards as if they were going to play the card game, "War". "One for you, one for me" we say :).

The students will each turn over two cards at the same time. Each student will total their own two cards and compare the total with their partner's. The student with the greater total, "wins"! Our First Graders were all winners today with this game. They worked quietly with their partners and even tried out the strategy, "Count On". Look for this game in your student's Communication Folder for extra homework. Your student will be happy to teach you how to play :)!

We are the Super Scientists!
First Graders are not just going to sit back and leave all the discovery to grownups. We found out that we can be Scientists right now! We can use the tools that we already have (Our Five Senses) to observe and discover the world around us!

After going on our Science Field Trip ,(A Nature Walk) to the trail behind our playground, we made some amazing discoveries about objects. We each chose a single object to bring back to our classroom for futher observation. With the use of a hand lens, we attacked our task of describing our object in our Science Journal. We learned that this is called "recording data" or "recording our observations". Ask your First Grade Student, "What is a Scientist?", you may be amazed at their answer!

Class Promise

Each and Everyday, we promise to show respect to our fellow students, our teachers, and to our own learning. Together we have created a class promise that we say each morning after our pledge. What a fabulous first day we had! We began our day by getting to know each other and learning the routines of our new classroom. Our WOW for the day was a special band appearance in the Dining Room. We danced, sang, and clapped! One of our students even got to play on stage!!!!
We had a yummy lunch, wrote to introduce ourselves, went on a Grand Tour of the school, and had a popscicle recess :). We were danced our way out the door to the tune of a Steel Drum Band. Oh my, oh my what a wonderful day! Check out a few pictures from our day :).

Hi Groovy First Graders!

My name is Heather Correia and I am one of your teachers this year! I hope you all are ready to disco down with Mrs. Bridges and I! We are so excited to teach you and to get to know each of you! We have a year filled with fun and learning and have many exciting things planned ALREADY!

I hope you had a wonderful summer...mine was VERY busy! In addition to teaching here at Chets Creek, I have also been a Tae Kwon Do Instructor for 16 years in Jacksonville Beach! This summer my school competed in an international tournament in Orlando, Fl. It was called the U.S. Open. Martial Artists from all over the world were there! It was so cool to all be together in one place like that! I will post more pictures later so you all can see! :)

I also did a summer camp this year! For the last 4 years I have done a 2 weeks summer camp after school ended. This year was our biggest year! There were quite a few Chets Creek students there! We did things like arts and crafts, piano lessons, guitar lessons, fear factor, dancing and outside games. The kids had a lot of fun...even though it was a lot of work for me! lol

Oh, also I live very close to Chets Creek and I have 2 dogs! Trey and Saki.....and they are both very spoiled! Trey is 14 years old and Saki is 9! I put a picture on here so you can see them!

Mrs. Bridges' Summer Adventures

Dear Fabulous First Graders,

My name is Mrs. Rachel Bridges and I am one of your new First Grade Teachers. I am so excited to meet you and for our Disco Party to begin! I can't wait to hear all about your summer adventures. I wanted to share mine with you as well as introduce myself.

The summer is always a wonderful time to spend with family and friends and this year, I did just that. I have throughouly enjoyed spending time with my husband, Zach (Mr. Bridges) and my two adorable sons, Josiah (2 yrs.) and Josh (1yrs.). We have had a great time visiting the Jacksonville Zoo, going to the beach, and spending time with our families. We have taken advantage of every opportunity to stay cool whether at swimming lessons or just under a beach umbrella. Have you been at the pool or the beach this summer?

I bet you have, it has been a scorcher!

I got to spend some sunny relaxation time in Key Largo this summer, where I went snorkeling for the first time! Mr. Bridges and I took a four hour boat ride to a Coral Reef Preserve in Key Largo, Florida to check out some of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen! We actually got to visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which has some amazing history and has the only live coral reef in the continental United States.

Well, I can't wait to meet all of you amazing First Graders and I know that together with Ms. Correia and Mrs. Matics, we will have a wonderful and successful year!

We hope that you have been getting ready all summer for this amazing adventure as a learner and/or as a parent. We can't wait to meet you at Orientation and show off our plans for the year.
